Fred
Tomorrow is the day off of school and I am going to be supervised by Dad because Mom has to take Grandpa to the hospital for at least two tests and maybe three. Dad and I have been making a plan for our day together. He asked me what I wanted to do and I had to think very careful about what I would tell him. My dad is busy with his work that is saving people from jail. He is not around a lot because he has to save the people. Sometimes I think it is very good that my dad wants to save the people that didn’t do the crimes. Sometimes I think that it is good to have a world where someone wants to save the people that didn’t do the crimes. Sometimes I wonder how my dad knows for sure that they didn’t do the crimes. When I ask him he says sometimes it is conflicting evidence or a witness that changed their story to the truth or it could be something new that just suddenly appeared like magic and means the person is not guilty. Dad says Fred do you want to be a lawyer too? You sound very interested in the mechanics of the justice system. I have to think about how to answer so I do not hurt his feelings. I say Dad I do not think I want to be a lawyer because I think that some people who do crimes are lying when they say that they did not do the crime and then I have to believe them and it is hard for me to believe lies. Dad says sometimes the truth has two sides. I say Dad truth is a word and it lies flat on the paper and cannot have two sides.
Sometimes I think it is very nice that my father wants to help the not-guilty guys because they have families and sometimes kids and maybe a wife. But then sometimes I think that I would rather just have a normal dad who believes the truth is just the truth and knows exactly what to do with me on a day off.
